I’m Getting Better at Asking

Day 235 – July 16, 2026

I have never particularly enjoyed asking for things. This is inconvenient because life requires a shocking amount of it. Ask for the opportunity. Ask for the rate. Ask for help. Ask for clarification. Ask for what you need. Ask somebody to stop doing something. Ask somebody to start. Ask whether there is room. Ask whether the answer might be yes.

There is vulnerability in every one of those. Maybe that is why so many of us avoid it. If you do not ask, nobody can reject you. They also cannot say yes.

Details.

Lately I have been asking more. Not constantly. I have not transformed into some fearless networking machine who enters every conversation with a pitch deck. God forbid. But I am getting more comfortable sending the email. Reaching out. Following up. Saying I am interested. Saying I would like to work together. Saying I have something valuable to offer without immediately adding six disclaimers to make everybody comfortable. That last part may be the hardest.

It is astonishing how quickly we can soften ourselves when we want something. “I know you are probably busy.” “This may be a stupid question.” “No worries at all if not.” “I completely understand if…” Sometimes those things are polite. Sometimes they are tiny exits we install for ourselves before the other person has even answered. I have been trying to notice when I do that.

There is nothing wrong with being gracious. I like gracious. Wild Poise literally has grace in the name. But grace and self erasure are not synonyms. I can ask clearly. I can say what I want. I can survive no. That last one is the secret.

A no feels much less terrifying when you stop treating it like a verdict. No can mean timing. No can mean budget. No can mean somebody else got there first. No can mean not this. It does not automatically mean not you.

I wish I had understood that earlier.

I probably missed things because I assumed rejection would hurt more than wondering. Turns out wondering can last for years. A no generally takes eleven seconds. Efficient. And yes is sitting on the other side of the same risk.

Some of the things happening in my life right now exist because I asked. Or applied. Or submitted. Or replied. Or put something somewhere another person could find it. That sounds painfully obvious, but I think we underestimate how much of life is moved by tiny acts of nerve.

Not heroic courage. Just enough courage to hit send. I am good at hitting send now. Well. Better. Sometimes I still stare at the button as though it controls a missile silo. Then I press it anyway. Progress.

I think rebuilding confidence has looked more like this than anything else. Not waking up one morning suddenly convinced I am magnificent. Although that sounds fun and I remain available. It has been accumulating evidence that I can handle the answer. Whatever it is.

That changes everything.

If I can handle no, I can ask bigger questions. If I can handle disappointment, I can want bigger things. If I can handle being misunderstood, I can be clearer about who I am. Maybe confidence is not believing nothing can hurt you. Maybe it is knowing hurt does not get the final vote. I like that better.

So I am asking. Not for everything. Not from everyone. But when something matters? I am trying not to talk myself out of the possibility before anybody else gets the chance.

Chaos in one hand. Grace in the other.

And my finger hovering considerably less dramatically over Send.
