I Missed Being Annoyed by Stupid Things

Day 240 – July 21, 2026

I got irrationally irritated today over something completely stupid. And it was wonderful. Not the irritation. That part was annoying. But the fact that my brain had enough room to care. There were months when every emotion seemed to have to pass through the same checkpoint. Is this important? Is this dangerous? Is this related to what happened? If not, please take a number.

Apparently my nervous system was operating on a limited emotional budget. Now the budget has expanded enough to include things like a website loading slowly, somebody standing in the middle of an aisle, a lid that absolutely refuses to screw on correctly, and Roger deciding the best place to stand is directly in front of me while I am trying to walk.

This is progress. I am not even joking.

There is something very normal about being annoyed by something that does not matter. It means your entire life is not being filtered through crisis. I forgot how much personality returns when fear stops using all the oxygen. Sarcasm, for example. Mine survived beautifully. Possibly too beautifully. Curiosity too. I notice things again. Not threats. Just things.

The weird way people park. A house with an unexpectedly great front door. Someone wearing a fantastic outfit at the grocery store. The smell of somebody grilling three blocks away. A cloud that looks ridiculous. Roger staring at absolutely nothing like he has just received a message from another dimension.

Those little observations are part of me. I did not realize how much I missed them.

For a while, the world felt smaller because everything inside me was so loud. Now the outside world is interesting again. That feels enormous. There is so much ordinary beauty hiding in places nobody is trying to make beautiful.

Light through a window. Somebody laughing too loudly at a restaurant. A dog asleep upside down with complete faith that gravity will sort itself out. None of this fixes anything. That is what makes it good. Not everything has to fix something.

I have spent too much time treating every pleasant thing like medicine. Walk because it helps anxiety. Write because it processes emotion. Rest because your body needs recovery. Call someone because connection is healthy. Sometimes I want to walk because the weather is nice. Sometimes I want to write because I have a weird thought. Sometimes I want to lie down because lying down is fucking excellent.

We have over therapized existence a little. I understand why. There is value in knowing what helps. But I do not want every good thing in my life to become another treatment plan. I want some things to just be mine. Pointless. Pleasant. Silly. Annoying. Normal.

I am beginning to understand that normal does not mean boring. Normal means safe enough to care about stupid shit again. I missed that. I missed being irritated by tiny inconveniences. I missed rolling my eyes. I missed saying, “Are you fucking serious?” about something that genuinely did not matter. There is a kind of freedom in triviality.

Maybe that sounds ridiculous. Fine. I have survived enough serious things to earn ridiculous.

Chaos in one hand. Grace in the other.

And apparently somebody put the grocery carts back in the wrong place again.
