Maybe Success Is Allowed to Be Fun
Day 222 – July 3, 2026
I have noticed something deeply inconvenient about myself. I am very good at preparing for disaster. I am considerably less practiced at enjoying things when they go well. Bad news arrives and my entire system knows what to do. Analyze. Prepare. Survive. Make contingency plans. Assume crash position.
Good news arrives and I stare at it suspiciously. What do you want? That seems unfair. If I am going to put all this effort into surviving difficult things, I should at least be allowed to enjoy the parts that do not suck. So I am working on that.
There have been genuinely good things happening. Writing work. Opportunities. People reading. Positive conversations. Ideas becoming real. The website growing. Small moments where I realize something I hoped might happen is actually beginning to happen.
My instinct is immediately to move the goalpost. Okay, great, but what next? Fine, but it is not enough yet. Nice, but do not get too excited.
Who taught us that? Seriously. Why are adults so suspicious of excitement? Children get a balloon and lose their fucking minds. Correct response, honestly. Adults accomplish something they worked toward for six months and say, “Yeah, it’s good. We’ll see.” Absolutely miserable behavior.
I refuse. Or I am trying to.
There is nothing arrogant about enjoying something you worked for. There is nothing foolish about being excited. Celebration is not a binding contract promising nothing bad will ever happen again. It just means something good happened now. That should be enough.
I think trauma taught me to distrust good moments because part of me was always waiting for the correction. Do not get comfortable. Do not get too happy. Something can change. And yes. Something always can. That is the terrible and wonderful thing about life. Everything changes. Including bad things.
I somehow remember that less often.
So I want to get better at letting myself have the good parts. When somebody compliments my writing, say thank you instead of mentally listing seventeen flaws. When an opportunity appears, enjoy it before immediately calculating how it could disappear. When traffic grows, smile. When something works, admit it worked. When I am happy, be fucking happy. Revolutionary.
Maybe success is not supposed to feel like constantly sprinting toward the next benchmark. Maybe sometimes it is sitting for a second and noticing where you already are. I am somewhere I did not expect to be. I am writing. People are reading. Somebody pays me to do it. Wild Poise is alive and growing. There are ideas everywhere.
My life is still messy. I still panic. I still hurt. I still have days when all this progress seems imaginary. And I can still be proud. There is no rule saying pride only becomes available after pain has completely disappeared. There better not be, because that seems like an extremely inefficient system.
So today I am letting myself enjoy it.
Not forever. Not as some declaration that I have arrived. Just today. Something good is happening. Several good things, actually. And instead of immediately asking when the universe plans to collect payment, I am going to say something that still feels almost mischievous.
Good. I like this. More, please.
Chaos in one hand. Grace in the other.
And for once, I am letting myself enjoy the party.
