My dog, Roger, has zero responsibilities, pays no bills, contributes nothing to household chores, and still manages to teach me more about life than any human I\u2019ve ever dated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s never had a job. He doesn\u2019t understand mirrors. He does not comprehend taxes, heartbreak, or the concept of \u201cwork emails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does<\/em> understand me. Sometimes better than I understand myself. He\u2019s my 60lb four-legged rock of a protector, my comic relief, and my emotional support muse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s still an unbelievably silly goofball with the personality of a sitcom character and the confidence of an unsupervised toddler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the life lessons he keeps dropping by simply being himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

1. If you love someone, act like it. Immediately. Whole body. No notes.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger doesn\u2019t save affection for the \u201cright moment.\u201d Roger is<\/em> the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he loves you, your ribs will know. He vibrates. He wiggles. He deploys full-body enthusiasm like he\u2019s TSA clearing you for joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile humans are whispering, \u201cI don\u2019t want to seem obsessed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please, Roger is obsessed with me and thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

2. Joy doesn\u2019t need a reason or permission.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger gets the zoomies because he remembered he has legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He chases nothing like it owes him money. He prances with a squeaky toy like he just won an acting award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s silly, he\u2019s wild, he\u2019s gentle (most of the time), and he celebrates existence like it\u2019s a sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Rest like you invented it.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger will sleep 14 hours a day and still take a nap to recover from the nap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He yawns like he\u2019s lived through trauma he refuses to discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He does not earn rest.
He claims<\/em> rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly? Revolutionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

4. Confusion is not a crisis. It\u2019s Tuesday.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He will stare down the vacuum like it\u2019s ancient evil. He will track floating dust like it\u2019s a coded message. He will tilt his head at sounds only he and the supernatural can hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never spirals.
Never Googles symptoms.
Never panics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He just accepts confusion and moves on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

5. If the vibe is wrong, exit the scene like you were never there.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dogs don\u2019t negotiate vibes. They don\u2019t wait for \u201cone more sign.\u201d They don\u2019t text a friend, \u201cIs this weird or am I weird?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger sniffs once, decides, \u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d and checks out like he\u2019s avoiding bath time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We give people entire seasons we should\u2019ve canceled at the pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be the dog.
Walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

6. Confidence is a posture, not a personality.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger walks around my apartment like it\u2019s his architectural masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head up. Shoulders proud. Tail on mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows<\/em> he\u2019s handsome.
He knows<\/em> he\u2019s charming.
He knows<\/em> he\u2019s the main attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teach me your ways, sir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

7. Forgiveness is easy when you don\u2019t take things personally.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If I step on his paw? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He collapses like he\u2019s been betrayed in a Shakespeare play. I apologize. Five seconds later he\u2019s laying across my body in full cuddle mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He forgives instantly.
He resets instantly.
He does not hold grudges longer than a sneeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile humans hold grudges over punctuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

8. Comfort doesn\u2019t need dialogue, just presence.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He doesn\u2019t give speeches.
He doesn\u2019t ask clarifying questions.
He doesn\u2019t break down the psychology of my day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He just sits next to me until my nervous system remembers it\u2019s safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has emotional intelligence with a brain the size of a lime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

9. Be yourself with the commitment of a creature who has never once felt embarrassed.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger runs weird. He sleeps dramatic. He rolls out of the bed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He plays tug-of-war with the seriousness of an Olympic athlete. He murders stuffies like it\u2019s a calling. He entertains himself with toys for hours like he\u2019s hosting a one-dog variety show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has never<\/em> known shame…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine being that free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Assume you\u2019re loved and watch your whole life get easier.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Roger enters every space like the room is lucky he arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He assumes love.
He assumes friendship.
He assumes snacks.
He assumes good things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And wildly it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile I spiral because someone took too long to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dog doesn\u2019t understand trauma responses, dating, deadlines, bills, or why I gasp dramatically every time I lose my phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He doesn\u2019t worry about the future.
He doesn\u2019t question his worth.
He doesn\u2019t analyze every interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He just lives fully, loudly, joyfully, gently, wildly and trusts he\u2019s safe because he\u2019s with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s not trying to teach me anything.
He\u2019s not performing emotional growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s just being Roger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, that\u2019s the lesson every single time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe life gets easier when you stop complicating what was always simple and let yourself be loved the way your dog already loves you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
